TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - As many as 125 types of hot peppers are displayed at the Chili Festival, part of Tangerang Peh Cun Festival, held in the area of Boen Tek Bio temple near the Cisadane river from Saturday to Sunday, June 15-16 at 10:00 to 20:00. The Chili Festival is located at Roemboer Tangga Ronggeng area.
The vast variation of hot pepper, also with various shapes, are displayed on a table covered with batik rug. The Giant Aconcagua is the type of chili that has the biggest size with 25 centimeters long and 7 cm wide.
Another giant hot pepper is Italian Sweet Pepper with 20 centimeters long and 5 cm wide. "This is an entertainment program for the public. Everyone is welcomed to visit, including tourists from outside Tangerang, even from abroad," said the head of Chili Festival committee, Hendra Ang.
Not only the festival shows giant-size chilies, but it also exhibits a lot of different types of chili plants. Hendra said the chili-themed festival is held since it has a specific meaning for Chinese descents. He said that hot pepper represents an honest attitude because of its spicy taste that hit those who eat it since the very first bite.
"No one will be hit by the spiciness the day after they eat it," he said.
Hendra added that the spicy taste of a type of hot pepper cannot be identified from its color, size, or shape.
"Chili has always been found at home as it is an essential herb for cooking and the main ingredient for making sambal (hot sauce)," he said.
